StrongHearts is proud to be the home of CrossFit Courtenay! We are focused on bring the best of CrossFit Training to the Comox Valley. CrossFit Training is a fun, high intensity workout focused on creating well rounded athletes who excell when faced with unpredictable challenges. Our CrossFit classes will involve a warm up, mobility and pre-hab work, a strength component, the daily WOD or workout of the day, and a cool down/stretch. Every CrossFit workout is scalable to each individuals needs and current fitness level.
We are a fully licensed CrossFit affiliate, Coach Adam Morden was one of the first CrossFit affiliates in Canada (Since 2005) and amoung the first 100 CrossFit affiliates worldwide! Adam was also one of the first 3 CrossFit level 2 Trainers in Canada (Since 2007).
CrossFit is “constantly varied functional movements performed at a relatively high intensity.”
In simpler terms, CrossFit is an exciting and dynamic way of training that will constantly keep your body guessing and allow you to continually get more fit and stronger. Each day you walk into the gym, the WOD (Workout of the Day) is different and may include exercises you’ve never tried before. As a result, CrossFit builds athleticism, not just fitness. There is constantly room for improvement and goals to work towards.
CrossFit was originally introduced to the world in 2000 by Greg Glassman and has exploded in popularity since. It incorporates a huge variety of movements taken from different forms of training and sport including: Olympic lifting, Powerlifting, Strongman, Endurance training, Gymnastics, and Kettlebell. The movements used are functional, meaning that they engage the whole body and build strength and skill that can be transferred to real-life scenarios.
The best part about CrossFit is that it builds community, not just fitness. Crossfit WODs bring people together and build friendship through challenges. CrossFit Courtenay has a strong sense of camaraderie. Every individual in our gym understands the hardships brought about through CrossFit and knows what it’s like succeed in a workout, feel defeated and to start as a beginner. We welcome anyone and everyone who is willing to give CrossFit their best shot.
Crossfit is also competitive. It is known as the “Sport of Fitness” and the event known as The Reebok Crossfit Games are held yearly in California to determine the fittest man, women and gym in the world. However, not everyone wants to compete at this level. We have a friendly competitive atmosphere in the gym where members compete with each other or themselves to improve their performance. We also provide training support so that athletes that wish to enter formal competitions can do so.
CrossFit is “universally scalable” and all exercises can be adjusted to accommodate all fitness levels. Exercises and weights and can be changed relative to an individuals’ ability and increased as they gain strength over time. At the end of a workout, everyone should feel just as taxed and out of breathe, regardless of their fitness.
